New Wexford County Library Build Begins

Wexford County Council signed contracts with Michael McNamara and Co. Ltd., on Monday, 2nd November 2009 for the construction of the new County Library on Mallon Street

The Mallon Street Library will be six times the size of the current building, which is off Redmond Square.

It will have the most modern technology and access to electronic information as well as space for a generous library collection and dedicated areas for library activities.   Spread over three floors, plans also include a research area where Wexford Studies can be housed properly, overlooking and providing cultural resonance for the town’s historic wall which will be conserved by the building which also has a viewing platform.

“ Wexford’s new County Library   is long overdue”, said Cllr. Anna Fenlon, Cathaoirleach of Wexford Council Council.  “In this Information Age it will be an important part of the educational and economic infrastructure of the county as well as the town.  People are eagerly awaiting the additional services this new library will bring.”

Part-funded by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Wexford County Library project will cost about 7 million Euro.  The total project will take two years and the library is expected to be open in early 2012.
