SEVEN LEAGUES MORE - Art Alongside Exhibition 2008

SEVEN LEAGUES MORE

21st April – 3rd May 2008

Art Alongside is a visual arts project for primary schools supported and funded by Wexford County Council and the Arts Council. The project aims to provide a dynamic and relevant experience of the visual arts to children and adults of County Wexford, through the establishment of a formal structure in which professional artists can work in an educational/community context, while maintaining their own practice as artists.

The title of this year’s exhibition was Seven Leagues More. The project celebrates the seventh year of Art Alongside which has been featured by a hugely successful partnership between Wexford County Council, the Arts Council, Wexford Arts Centre and the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

In September 2007, the project artists exhibited their personal art works created especially for the annual Art Alongside exhibitions during the last seven years. The exhibition was entitled Seven Leagues Later, and was held at the Wexford Arts Centre alongside a slide show displaying examples of children’s work from each of these projects. The themes so far have included

·         River Rhythms

·         The Ark

·         Face to Face

·         Flight

·         Down to Earth

·         Flotsam and Flying Fish

·         Opposite Ends of the Spectrum

·         Roots, Beanstalks and Growing Up

Class groups visited the Seven Leagues Later exhibition, which then became the starting point for a new project based on materials, themes or images that inspired the children.

Seven Leagues More is the second exhibition in this project. It exhibits works selected from IMMA’s National Collection alongside a selection of art works created by the primary school children of Ballycanew, Boolavogue, Bunclody, Rathgarogue, Oylegate, Kilrane and Coolcotts National Schools.
